Ireland win Rolex Commodores' Cup

Ireland has done it. After mounting multiple teams, considered favourite going into both the 2006 and 2008 events but failing to win either, so the Irish boats Antix, Marinerscove.ie and Roxy 6 today secured the Rolex Commodores' Cup for the emerald isle.
"It is delightful to finally have a chance to get our hands on the trophy," declared Anthony O'Leary, owner and helmsman of the Ker 39 Antix, the Irish team's big boat. "For all three boats, the Rolex Commodores' Cup has been the absolute pinnacle of what we have wanted to do this year. While Antix and Marinerscove have been around, it is a credit to the guys on Roxy because they had a new build and got the boat in the water, and then there were all the attendant things you have to do. Owner Rob Davies, in fairness to him, didn't take a huge amount of persuasion to sign up and make the extra effort required to do it. We owe him a huge debt."David Dwyer and his Marinerscove.ie team were equally ecstatic. "I bought this boat in 2006 and we have been waiting since then for the right time. This time it worked. It was absolutely brilliant."Roxy 6's pro sailor Maurice 'Prof' O'Connell added: "We put in a massive effort and it is nice to have got the reward. Cowes is going to go ballistic tonight!" O'Learys lead the charge

Keelboat - Star
The big guns of the Star fleet had been put in the shade all week by the Irish team of Peter O'Leary and Frithjof Kleen. The Sydney 2000 Olympic Finn bronze medalist, Fredrik Loof and his crew Johan Tillander (SWE) had just edged ahead of the Irish yesterday, but O'Leary and Kleen were not to be denied. They sailed a very collected race to come third, and with Loof and Tillander back in ninth, the Irish were golden. Poland's Mateusz Kusznierewicz and Dominik Zycki went home with bronze, fending off the former Laser superstar, Brazil's Robert Scheidt and his crew Bruno Prada
In the Commodores Cup. boats have been returning to Cowes Yacht Haven throughout today, back from the offshore race of the 2010 Rolex Commodores' Cup. With a 2.5x point co-efficient this race had the potential to provide a major upset in the results, but after four days of competition the Irish team hold an even more commanding lead, now up to 29.5 points. Hong Kong has regained second place, this time with a 25-point cushion over the leading French team, which in turn is just 5 points ahead of GBR Red and 15 points ahead of France Yellow in fifth. Hong Kong and Ireland scored equal points in the offshore race with the former's Rockall III winning the small boat class while the latter's marinerscove.ie claimed the mid-sized class

Light & Fickle at the Niobe

Niobe Trophy 2010. Saturday May 1st saw the start of the Royal Alfred Yacht Club’s 2010 season with the Niobe trophy races in Howth. This time the Etchells and SB3’s were joined, for the first time, by the largest one design fleet in Howth Yacht Club , the Puppeteers who added a welcome addition to the days racing and entertainment. Winds were fickle to say the least and speeds ranged from zero to 6.5 kts and direction from 0.50 to 1.50 giving the PRO Harry Gallagher and ARO Royal Alfred’s Vice Commodore Barry McNeany a torrid time as they sought to find some stability on the wind direction and wind speed to lay a course.
The morning saw one race starting in 6kts of wind only to find the wind dying during the second round of the windward leeward course and only the Etchells making it to the finish with the SB3’s and Puppeteers finishing on a shortened course. As one good humoured sailor described it, we then had a “long pause” in proceedings as the wind died completely. However both Pro and Aro worked hard to find wind in any part of the sailing area and finally managed to set a course and give the sailors a good second race with a finish in time to get to watch the Rugby ! The Royal Alfred Yacht Club would like to thank HYC for the facilities and willing assistance to run the event, Team PR Reilly who sponsored the “goody bags” for the sailors and Harry Gallagher and the mark laying crews for their patience and hard work.
Thanks too must go to all the competitors who with good humour stayed on the water waiting for the second race despite the downpour that made many cold and uncomfortable.
