Paul Murphy IJ RIP

After a very long battle Paul Murphy passed away peacefully on Saturday evening.
Paul has served Irish sailing as a National Umpire and National Judge for many years and in 2002 was appointed by ISAF to serve as an International Judge. He is well known to almost all sailors in Ireland having worked both on the water and ashore in his role as Judge for many classes. He is particularly well known for his work with the Laser and J/24 Class Associations and attended many of their National, European and World championship regattas. Paul was assiduously fair in his interpretation and application of the Racing Rules of Sailing and frequently would go out of his way to help a young sailor to understand why he gave him a penalty.
Along with his roles as an Umpire and Judge he served on the ISA Racing Rules Appeal Board and also on the ISA Tribunal. He was a member of the National Yacht Club and Royal Alfred Yacht Club where he served as Vice Commodore until earlier this year and was particularly pleased to be involved in the Alfred’s 150th anniversary celebrations in 2007. He will be missed his many friends in Ireland and around the world. Ed A ISA

Royal Alfred is 150 years old in 2007

Royal Alfred Yacht Club founded in 1857 is 150 years old next year and the Flag Officers and Committee are planning a big celebration Regatta. More details will emerge during the Autumn. The Royal Alfred has many firsts in the development of Yacht Racing which we continue to promote today and is quite simply: the world's oldest specifically amateur yacht club (founded 1857)
The world's first offshore racing club (1868-1922)
The first club to organise single and double handed yacht races
The prime mover behind the formation of the world's first national yacht racing organisation (1872)
And finally, its two Flag Officers are credited with the authorship of the first national yacht racing rules, which are at the core of today's racing rules worldwide. Interestingly, three of today's Flag Officers are International ISAF Race Judges, Umpires and Race Officers maintaining the long tradition of contributing to race administration.

Dun Laoghaire Regatta Championships 2005 Success

The DL Regatta Championships were a huge success, despite the Dublin Bay winds playing games and providing head wrecking situations for SRO's Henry Leonard, Hal Bleakely, Tony O'Gorman, Jack Roy and Colin McMullen. Although the big boats had the short end of the wind most classes completed good race programs Henry and Colin gleaning the best for their fleets mid bay. On shore the org was faultless in the race office led by Catriona McNally and the large volumes of results were churned and revised after protest with incredible speed by Valerie Kinnear's Results Team. The stars though were Ciara Dowling Regatta Sec and Brian Craig Chairman who worked tirelessly throughout to keep the show running on the water and ashore. Thanks to everybody who helped make it all such a fantastic success. Roll on 2007!!
