Ireland win Rolex Commodores' Cup

Ireland has done it. After mounting multiple teams, considered favourite going into both the 2006 and 2008 events but failing to win either, so the Irish boats Antix, Marinerscove.ie and Roxy 6 today secured the Rolex Commodores' Cup for the emerald isle.
"It is delightful to finally have a chance to get our hands on the trophy," declared Anthony O'Leary, owner and helmsman of the Ker 39 Antix, the Irish team's big boat. "For all three boats, the Rolex Commodores' Cup has been the absolute pinnacle of what we have wanted to do this year. While Antix and Marinerscove have been around, it is a credit to the guys on Roxy because they had a new build and got the boat in the water, and then there were all the attendant things you have to do. Owner Rob Davies, in fairness to him, didn't take a huge amount of persuasion to sign up and make the extra effort required to do it. We owe him a huge debt."David Dwyer and his Marinerscove.ie team were equally ecstatic. "I bought this boat in 2006 and we have been waiting since then for the right time. This time it worked. It was absolutely brilliant."Roxy 6's pro sailor Maurice 'Prof' O'Connell added: "We put in a massive effort and it is nice to have got the reward. Cowes is going to go ballistic tonight!" Patriots Cup September 26-28 2008

For the first time in almost two decades the 'Patriots' was not run in Newport Rhode Island last September and is being revived by the Alfred which ran the return event on this side of the Atlantic up until 2006. The Alfred is planning to run the event in conjunction with the waterfront Yacht Clubs in late September utilising the J80's of the ISA Sailfeet. Sailing host will be the Royal Irish YC. The format agreed will be four boat team racing using two flights. Four teams will be invited from North America, two Irish teams -Sigma and Royal Alfred and two UK teams Royal Thames and Hamble River SC. The event has a strong social dimension and saw many suppoters from the US travelling to the event in Dun Laoghaire. Ida Lewis YC has won the event in recent years after breaking the longtime stranglehold of Hamble SC. New York Yacht Club, Storm Trysail and Larchmount will likely comprise the US contingent with the holders. The event is sponsored by Dublin Port. Notice of race link below or access from downloads.

Independent Bear takes Lee Overlay Series 2006

Mat Davis Independent Bear took the Arklow overnight race from Tom Fitzpatrick's Baily to win the overall series from Adrian Lee's Irisha. Oliver Sheehy's Tiger which won the Rockabill and ODAS 25 races didn't compete but took third overall in the Series. Starting in a flat calm on Friday evening Commodore Ailbe Millerick shortened the course to North Arklow Buoy. A southerly zephyr filled to start the fleet on time with a favourable time. Irisha won the start and the fleet headed towards Muglins on an apparent wind created by the strong ebb tide. The wind filled later during the night and allowed spinakers to be set from the Arklow Buoy. Staying out side the India Bank, Baily finished at 4.58 only 10 mins behind Independent Bear on corrected time with Derek Ryans Antix finishing third only 5 minutes behind Baily on corrected time. 14 boats entered the series and 10 raced. A satisfactory first series said Adrian Lee sponsor and competitor. THe prize giving Dinner will be held in the Royal St George Yacht Club in early December.

Dan O'Grady takes Niobe Trophy HYC 2006

Varied conditions tested both the race committee and the Etchells fleet over the weekend. Saturday's showers saw SRO Ailbe Millerick move every leg of the course to keep it true in the passing showers culminating in a flat calm after a shortened race two. The wind filled in after an hour driven by a rainstorm over Portmarnock. Anthony Shanks' conservative sailing gave him the lead saturday with 2-1-2 placings. NIls Razmilovic, an Etchells international hot shot, looked impressive in the first race, settled for 1-4-4 with Dan O'Grady scoring 6-3 and winning the last race. Sunday provided a shifting NW of 16-18 knots. Graham Elmes came up the fleet with a win in the 5th race. The fleet finished within one minute that race. Tom FItz sailing Frank Nortons Mano, shed a 13th on the discard and won the last race to finish 3rd overall. Razmilovic and O'Grady tied on 15 points with the break giving the Niobe Trophy to O'Grady/ Beshoff/o'Donoghue. Elmes / Casey 4th OA and Des Flood's Who cares 5th OA. See photo gallery.
