RAYC News - Good breeze & sunshine promised for Bloomsday

Bloomsday delivered 10 knots and sunshine for a champagne sailing day on Dublin Bay. The fleets enjoyed close racing in a northeasterly breeze with sufficient shifts to fox the best. Hal Bleakley, Harry Gallagher and Barry McNeany laid three perfect windward leeward courses running two races for each fleet. George Sisks WOW won Cr0 on both handicaps. Raptor pipped the Commodores Aztec III on tie break in Cruisers One Echo, Rockabill beating Raptor on IRC. Jim McCann took Class 2 from Mervyn Dyke's J80 Jawsome on Echo but Jawsome won on IRC. Orna won Whitesails from Joe Cartons Voyager in IRC with Voyager taking Echo.The J109's raced scratch for the first time. B Moreton's Juke Box had an emphatic victory on scratch from Ken Grant's Tigh Soilis and Jump the Gun took Echo. Asterix Boushell/ Counihan/ Meredith scored first in both handicaps in Cr3. Chris Johnsons prospect won the 31.7's with two guns form Patrick Burkes Prima Nocte. Dermot Clarke's Gwili II won the Sigma's from Ken McCourt's Popje. Cathy McAleavey took the SB3's with two firsts and similarily Michael Halpenny's Susele showed the Dragons the way around the racecourse. Brian Denham shaded the Glens from Liz Faulkner's Glenshesk. With two guns Bruce Carswell Diane II true to form beat Anne Kirwan steering Ruff 'n Ready in the Ruffians. Henry Robinson's Whiterock kept the Clarke Bros Jo Slim in second for both Shipman races. Bloomsday Open Regatta 19 June 2010

The Alfred Bloomsday Open Regatta will be hosted for keel boats at the National Yacht Club where the race office will be located. Membership of the Alfred is NOT REQUIRED as this is an open regatta so come and race. Entries close Wed 16th. The Puppeteers will be visiting from Howth YC for the first time.Course options will be Round the Cans or windward leewards. The 109s have a seperate start and will race scratch & ECHO. Two races are scheduled for Cruisers Course A - if windward leewards are sailed and on designs Course B comprising 31.7s, Sigmas, Dragons & SB3s W/L only. Round the cans courses have one race only. Duncan, Goodbody, Lavery & Delany take honours!

Baily Bowl 2010 opened under the guidance of Harry Gallagher on the Dragon/ SB3 course & Brian Reddy on the Squib/ Flying 15 course. The Dragon/ SB3 course was laid in the east bay clear of Dubln Bay SC traffic. The SB3 starts were competitive with two general recalls in the first two races; the third race start getting away frst time with an individual recall. Ben Duncan's Sharkbait ably trimmed by Ric Morris from Howth dominated with 1,1,3 placings on Saturday & a 3rd Sunday to win with Dave Cheyney the leading challengers with two 2nd's and two 4ths counting. Marty Cuppage came through to 3rd OA with consistant sailing. The Dragons who started first time, took advantage of the recall delays by getting a fourth race in on Saturday and two Sunday. Place changes were frequent with Richard Goodbody steering new Diva crewed by the Johnson Brothers leading with two guns and consolidating on Sunday with Hegarty/ Bowring's Phantom coming though with a bullet in the 4th race Saturday to 3rd overall after an OCS on Sunday.Andrew Craigs Chimaera took a second win on Sunday to beat Phantom for second overall just a point behind Diva. In the west bay Vincent Delany dominated the Squibs with two guns even on points with Peter Wallace from Belfast Lough sailing Toys for the Boys on Saturday. A third gun Sunday gave Vincent's Femme Fatale victory. Frank Whelans Lola was consistant in the top three and took 3rd place. John Lavery and Dave O'Brien rule the F15's with three guns and Andy Martins gun on Sundays last race gave him second in ffekin Ejit. Brian McKees overnight 2nd place slipped to 3rd overall and the Doorly Brothers didn't sail on Sunday slipping to 7th. Weather was ideal for sailing with sunshine & fair westerlies. A change from the past two seasons of gales.
